AbstractThere are always bad blocks in NAND Flash, which puts the data reliability at risk, and comes up with a higher requirement for the storage system management. In this paper, a new bad block management algorithm for a spacecraft solid state recorder has been presented with higher reliability and less response time. Software is responsible for the normal address assignment, while hardware allocates the substituted address immediately a bad block appears. TheTriple Modular Redundancy (TMR) is adopted to strengthen the reliability of the Bad Block Table (BBT). There are three copies of the bad block table in the Central Processing Unit (CPU) memory Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM), and a simplified copy in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). One simplified copy in the FPGA ram decreased the response time. To further improve system reliability, the address allocation algorithm is optimized and simplified. The algorithm has been tested in a four-pipe-line and 32-bit parallel extended solid state recorder. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
