AbstractSparse concentric ring arrays composed of aperiodic rings with elements equally spaced in each ring are capable of achieving circularly symmetric patterns with low sidelobe level (SLL) compared with the thinning concentric ring arrays. Here teaching learning based optimization (TLBO) algorithm which is based on stochastic optimization is first applied to synthesizing sparse concentric ring arrays. TLBO is adopted to optimize the non-uniform ring radii considering the constraints on the aperture and the minimum inter-ring spacing so as to achieve circularly symmetric pattern with both the SLL and the number of elements reduced. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the performance and the potential applications of the proposed method. © 2016 European Association of Antennas and Propagation.
