AbstractThis paper investigates the leaky-wave radiation of a composite right/left-handed (CRLH) rectangular waveguide with long slot on its broadwall. The leaky-wave principle of the CRLH waveguide is first derived and then the leaky-wave radiation is analyzed for the long slots with different offsets on the broadwall. The results verify that the bigger offset of the slot corresponds to the larger leaky-wave factor. By tuning the geometry parameters of the CRLH waveguide, the propagation constant of the CRLH leaky-wave unit cell can maintained almost unchanged as the slot offset varies, while the leaky-wave factor can also have a considerable dynamic range. This characteristic may be applied to a CRLH leaky-wave antenna (LWA) with tapered excitation distribution using meandering long slot for low sidelobe level of the antenna pattern. © 2016 European Association of Antennas and Propagation.
