A wideband reconfigurable reflectarray antenna using single-layer varactor-loaded split patch elements

AbstractA novel single-layer wideband varactor-loaded split patch element is presented in this paper. In order to expand the reflection phase range and bandwidth of the element, an off-centered vertical slot is introduced to split the conventional varactor-loaded patch element into two asymmetrical parts. The simulation results show that 375° relatively linear reflection phase response and peak loss of 3.1dB is achieved at the working frequency of 13.58GHz by tuning the varactors. The phase response curves from 12.58GHz to 14.58GHz are almost parallel to each other, and the simulated phase bandwidth is 3.09% at 13.58GHz, which indicate that a wideband reconfigurable reflectarray could be achieved by using the element. A 9×9 center-fed reconfigurable reflectarray antenna is designed. Simulated results show that scanning beams from -45° to +45° with high gains more than 19.4 dB, good side lobe level (SLL) lower than -14.6dB, pointing error lower than 0.2° and wideband performance are achieved. © Institution of Engineering and Technology.All Rights Reserved.
