AbstractThe detection of moving point target is fairly difficult, especially when the imagery distance is so far that the target only occupies one pixel in the image. Under this condition, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is extremely low and the target is almost submerged by noise, all those bring huge difficulty for the detection. This paper presents a new method for the detection of dim point moving targets from high frame rate image sequence based on kernel theory. In our method, the problem is modeled to detect a weak signal of unknown scale and arrival time from cluttered backgrounds. Such SNR of target signal is extremely low, so de-noising pretreatment is very necessary. A new de-noising method for impact signal based on wavelet packet transform and kurtosis is also proposed. Then our method is applied in detecting weak moving point target from image sequences which are collected by a high-speed camera. In order to verify the performance of proposed method, the comparisons with traditional detection methods are provided. The experimental results show that the proposed method has great superiority in moving point target detection.
