An 150 GHz Waveguide Bandpass Filter Based on Micro-satellite Platform

AbstractEarth observation based on the micro-satellites networking technology has become one of the developing trends of space remote sensing in the future. In this paper, a terahertz waveguide filter is designed to meet the requirement of the atmospheric microwave sounder on-board. As the second stage of the RF direct detection radiometer system, the bandpass filter plays an very important role in retaining in-band signals and isolating out-band signals and finally in degrees uence the whole system. Meanwhile, it's also one of the keys to the miniaturization of radiometers. The filter is designed with center frequency of 150 GHz and bandwidth of 4 GHz by using the iris inductive coupled structure which can provide narrow pass band with high stop band rejection. This paper uses HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator) by Ansoft Corp. to simulate the designed filter and the results indicate that the 3 dB bandwidth is about 6.3 GHz. Over the entire pass band, the insertion loss is less than 0.03 dB and the return loss is lower than 16 dB. And the out-of-band rejection is better than 20 dB@10% relative bandwidth. Moreover, the measurement results of the fabricated filter show that the center frequency is about 149 GHz with a 3 dB bandwidth of 6.8 GHz. Over the pass band, the insertion loss is less than 1 dB and the return loss is better than 15 dB. In addition, the out-of-band isolation is larger than 20 dB@10% relative bandwidth. The measurement results reveal a similar transmission characteristic compared to the simulation results. These results prove that the waveguide filter can be used in the terahertz space remote sensing applications and satisfies the demand of micro-satellites.
