Abstract | An advanced terahertz atmospheric profiling sounder for Chinese next generation meteorological satellite (FY-5 satellite) is introduced in this paper, driven by recent advances in microwave device technology that now permit broad frequency bands and higher frequencies into more sounding channels in order to not only improve both the vertical and horizontal resolutions of the retrieved atmospheric profile, but also enhance sounding capability of atmospheric hydrometeor parameters, like water cloud, ice, snow, rain and gaupel. Global simulation studies over ocean and land in clear and cloudy atmospheres using WMO radiosonde datesets and NWP reanalysis are presented that assess the temperature, moisture, and precipitation sounding capability with channels sampled near the 89, 118.75, 183.31, 380 and 425GHz absorption lines. Channel specification and configuration are presented after channel correlation and retrieval demonstration, and the distribution of subsystem units are determined based on previous design experience and requirements of satellite platform. |
