Abstract | Typhoon is often accompanied by strong convective weather such as high winds and heavy rainfall. The dual-polarization radar observations show a great performance for quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) over traditional single-polarization radar by gleaning more useful information about precipitation particle size and shape distributions. According to the simulation of raindrop size distribution data from disdrometers in Guangzhou, China, this paper established a localized QPE algorithm for three typhoons landing in southern China. This regional QPE algorithm was compared with various rainfall relations such as the default ZR relationship ( Z = 300R(1)(.4)) adopted by the WSR-88D. Results show that the rainfall estimates with localized algorithms approximate to rainfall observations from surface meteorological stations. The localized QPE algorithm is more accurate and reliable than other algorithms for typhoon events over southern China. |
